Welcome to Egypt; welcome to the Sinai Peninsula the land of turquoise spanning 61,000 square kilometers that juts out into the Red Sea, sandwiched between the Gulf of Suez to the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east, the meeting point of continents; Africa and Asia and the separation point of seas.
For thousand of years Sinai has been one of the most important crossroads in the world, since the Pharaohs of Egypt built the road from Shur across Sinai to the towns of Beersheba and Jerusalem. The Romans and the Nabataea opened up a road from west to east, which later became the pilgrims’ route leading from Egypt to Mecca.
Apart from being a place passed through around 1250B.C, the Sinai desert experienced the great epic of the people of God. Here, Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments and here Hebrews made the painful way along the road to the Promised Land. During the first year of Christianity, Sinai was inhabited by legions of monks. Later, Saint Catherine monastery became the seat of bishopric.
